Men love the denim jacket and it is easy to see why.  It is not just because it is a design classic; it is because the denim jacket is easy.  It is an easy option to choose, it is easy to wear and, more importantly, it’s an easy style to carry off.  Let’s face it, most men do not care about their clothes.  They want to look good without having to do any work or think about “what shall I wear”; women may love that, and they do, but guys just want to throw on some casual clothes and grab a beer.  And if you are the sort of guy who does think about his clothes you are also going to love the denim jacket for the same reasons that it is a design classic and it is easy to wear.

Why Is The Denim Jacket Such A Classic?

Denim jackets have been around a long time and they are here to stay.  They look good and they wear well.  Whether you want a hard wearing jacket to work in or a stylish casual jacket for after work, denim is it.  They are easy to wear, affordable and versatile.  But the denim jacket is more than just a great piece of versatile clothing.  It is a statement piece.  Hollywood and the music industry have made the denim jacket the essence of all that is great about America.  It is the rugged individualism of John Wayne, the rebellious cool of Marlon Brando and the honest patriotism of Bruce Springsteen.  When they wear a denim jacket men feel and look like men.

How Not To Wear A Denim Jacket

It is easier to start with how not to wear a denim jacket.  You can wear a denim jacket with pretty much anything except a pair of jeans of the same color and tone.  It doesn’t work.  If you are an incredibly cool and handsome movie star you might just pull it off, but you are not, so you can’t and, even if you were you would probably still look silly.  A matching denim jacket and jeans does not work.  Ever.

How to Wear A Denim Jacket

Leaving aside the matching jeans, you can wear your denim jacket with pretty much anything.  For casual wear you can match it with a pair of chinos or plain pants.  For a working look add a pair of combat or corduroy pants.  While denim jackets are obviously not for formal wear, throwing one over a shirt and tie at the end of a day in the office will add a harder touch to your outfit.  In the same way, matching a denim jacket to some well tailored clothes will give them an edgy bohemian feel.  For the classic cool look just wear it over a plain white t-shirt and add a pair of shades.  But the great thing about a denim jacket is that you can just pick it up and throw it over whatever your wearing and it will work fine.  So if you’re just heading down to the store, going to the game, or off for a social evening, the denim jacket will be fine.

Types of Denim Jacket

Just as men spend less time worrying about what they will wear it with, so they can worry less about the style and detail of the jacket they wear.  Men are much more limited in what types of denim jacket they can wear, especially in terms of color.  They can wear any color denim they like as long as it is blue.  The occasional black denim jacket is also acceptable. The style shouldn’t be too tight as it will just make you look like you are carrying extra weight.  And, anyway, a jacket should be loose enough to wear comfortably.  Nor should it be too short or too long.  A basic blue denim jacket that fits comfortably over a shirt and hangs to around the waist of your pants is the classic denim jacket men should aim for.
